God's Sovereignty

While in Bulgaria we studied what it means to be connected to the Vine - Jesus Christ.  We also focused on God's sovereignty through one of the new songs we learned that week (Sovereign Over Us).  Neither one of us knew how important those themes would be to us as we arrived home.  We left Bulgaria spiritually refreshed, but also physically tired after a busy week of ministry.  We were also feeling a bit exhausted after several months of intense ministry.  We headed home knowing our schedule was slowing down a bit for the months of October & November.  We were looking forward to the opportunity to catch our breaths.  As you might expect by now, God had other plans for us.  And immediately we had opportunity to put into practice what we had begun learning in Bulgaria.  When we arrived home we found out the city sewer had backed up into our entire basement the day prior.  Gratefully my parents were staying in the house at the time taking care of the girls, so they were able to salvage quite a bit of our stuff.  But the damage was extensive - all the carpet had to be removed, some of the drywall had to be taken out, etc.   And we arrived home to a garage filled with stuff that had to be sorted out and sanitized.   Needless to say, we haven't had the opportunity to slow down yet.  We are three weeks removed from that initial news.  We have walked through many emotions since then.  Today we are filled with gratitude for the countless ways God has evidenced His goodness in these three weeks and how He is teaching us in a very practical way what it means for us to be connected to Him and to trust His sovereignty.    In light of eternity, a sewage backup really is not a big deal, and the stuff we lost is really of no value.  So we praise God today for His sovereignty and trust He will continue to draw us closer to Himself as we continue walking this journey.
 Good-bye carpet!
Part of our basement. . . .after the initial clean-up and sanitizing.
Our garage. . . . Yes, those are 12 large trash bags filled with laundry (stuffed animals, coats, bedding, clothes) - none of which were damaged by the sewage, but just stuff that needed to be washed for my own mental well-being.  As of today I only have 1 bag left - Yippee!!
